Automation Manager – Fulfillment Pharmacy

Position Summary

The Automation Manager supports the safe, accurate, and efficient preparation of medications in a fulfillment pharmacy. This role focuses on operating and maintaining adherence packaging and robotic automation systems to ensure timely delivery of individualized medication regimens. The Automation Manager will train Fulfillment Technicians on the operation of the robotic automation systems. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the technician ensures precision, regulatory compliance, and compassionate service aligned with the clinical goals of comfort, continuity, and patient-centered care.

Location:  Onsite, Mt. Laurel, NJ
Status: Full-time, 40+ hours per week

Key Responsibilities

Medication Preparation & Dispensing

    • Optimize pharmacy workflows for automation and scale solutions that improve throughput and reduce waste.
    • Accurately fill and label prescriptions under pharmacist supervision in accordance with state and federal regulations.
    • Prepare multi-dose or adherence packaging (e.g., blister cards) using robotic and automated dispensing technology.
    • Perform barcode verification, visual inspections, and batch audits to ensure accuracy prior to pharmacist verification.

Automation & Technology Operations

    • Manage and upgrade automated dispensing cabinets and robotic pill dispensers.
    • Operate and maintain robotic automation and adherence packaging equipment.
    • Load medications, calibrate canisters, and manage NDC updates to ensure correct product mapping in automation systems.
    • Conduct daily quality control checks, cleaning, and preventive maintenance as outlined in manufacturer protocols.
    • Troubleshoot minor automation issues and escalate system errors to appropriate technical support.
    • Responsible for the preventative maintenance of all automatic dispensing machines.
    • Point of contact with the vendor to schedule all vendor provided maintenance.

Training

  • Provide training to all Fulfillment Technicians on the automated dispensing systems.

Inventory & Supply Management

    • Receive, stock, and rotate inventory to maintain product integrity and compliance with storage requirements.
    • Manage controlled substances in accordance with DEA regulations and internal accountability procedures.
    • Monitor par levels and minimize medication waste.
    • Oversee inventory management via automation including ordering, tracking and managing project budgets.
    • Support reverse distribution and expired medication processing per policy.

Collaboration & Communication

    • Strong leadership, communication and analytical skills to drive change management.
    • Communicate proactively about order status, medication shortages, or delays in production.
    • Participate in team huddles, workflow reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance

    • Adhere to all state Board of Pharmacy laws, DEA regulations, HIPAA requirements, and company SOPs.
    • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety standards within the fulfillment and automation areas.
    • Document all activities accurately and in real time within designated systems.
    • Ensure that automation technologies align with regulatory standards including managing change controls and validation protocols.
    • Additional duties as assigned by the company in its sole discretion.

Qualifications

    • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Licensure/Certification:
      • Active state Pharmacy Technician license in New Jersey
      • National certification (PTCB or NHA).
    • Experience:
      • Minimum of 5 years of pharmacy technician experience required.
      • Minimum of 5 years of experience with robotic dispensing and adherence packaging systems required.
      • Minimum of 2 years of experience training on pharmacy automation systems required.
    • Skills & Competencies:
      • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
      • Comfortable with technology-driven workflows.
      • Ability to prioritize and perform effectively in a high-volume environment.
      • Team-oriented, reliable, and committed to quality patient care.

Physical & Work Environment

    • Requires standing for long periods and performing repetitive tasks such as counting, packaging, and operating machines.
    • Regular use of computers, barcode scanners, and automated dispensing equipment.
    • Pharmacy business hours with possible evening or weekend rotations based on operational needs.
