Job Title: Principal Engineer, Cloud & Data Platform

Reports to: Chief Technology Officer

Location: Remote (US); HQ Mt. Laurel, NJ — occasional travel

Status: Full-time

Key Responsibilities

Cloud Infrastructure & Operations

• We operate across AWS and Azure. You will own a meaningful share of that surface area, with the division of responsibility shaped around your strengths.

• Own a substantial share of day-to-day cloud operations: provisioning, monitoring, alerting, backup and recovery, patching, and cost management.

• Extend our infrastructure-as-code coverage — AWS CDK on AWS, and Bicep, Terraform, or equivalent on Azure — with version control, peer review, and repeatable environment builds. Strong Azure skills are especially welcome.

• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and application deployment.

• Apply and extend our resource tagging, naming, and cost-allocation standards so that cost reporting, incident routing, backup policy, and lifecycle automation are driven from metadata.

• Implement and maintain security controls appropriate to a HIPAA-regulated environment: least-privilege IAM, secrets management, network segmentation, encryption, logging, and audit evidence.

• Take point on infrastructure domains within your remit, and be the kind of engineer others can hand something to and stop worrying about it.

Data Engineering & EHR Integration

• Build and maintain integrations with client electronic health record systems over standards-based interfaces, with the tenant isolation, change tracking, and audit history that healthcare data demands.

• Develop and operate our layered data architecture on Databricks, with tested transformations and documented lineage.

• Build and maintain the pipelines that deliver curated data to the services behind our application layer.

• Produce and support the datasets behind billing, regulatory and client reporting, and analytics, including the reconciliation and data-quality checks those uses demand.

• Own pipeline reliability and cost: monitoring, alerting, failure recovery, performance tuning, and platform spend management.

• Contribute to data governance — cataloging, access control, PHI handling, and retention — in partnership with our data and security stakeholders.

AI-First Engineering

• Use AI coding agents and LLM tooling as a default part of your workflow for implementation, testing, documentation, and operations.

• Identify toil in our engineering and operational processes and automate it.

• Share what works with the rest of the company through our internal AI enablement sessions.

Ownership & Delivery

• Take a stated objective with light direction and drive it to a finished, production-ready result, surfacing tradeoffs and risks early rather than at the deadline.

• Write the documentation, diagrams, and runbooks that let the rest of the team operate what you build.

• Collaborate directly with clinical operations, pharmacy operations, finance, and vendor partners to understand what the data and infrastructure actually need to do.

• Additional duties as assigned by the company in its sole discretion.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

• Relevant certifications valued: AWS Solutions Architect / DevOps Engineer Professional, Azure Administrator or Solutions Architect, Databricks Data Engineer Professional.

Experience

• 15+ years of professional software, data, or infrastructure engineering experience, including a demonstrated record of independently driving significant technology projects from ambiguity to completion across multiple full platform lifecycles.

• Deep hands-on AWS experience across compute, networking, storage, IAM, and managed data services.

• Working Azure experience; experience bringing an existing cloud estate under infrastructure-as-code management is a strong differentiator.

• Production experience with Databricks — Spark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, workflows/jobs, and either Delta Live Tables or equivalent declarative pipeline tooling.

• Strong Python and SQL; comfortable owning code, not just configuration.

• Infrastructure as code in practice, not in theory: hands-on AWS CDK, or deep Terraform-equivalent experience you can carry into CDK, plus Git-based workflows and automated deployment. Bicep or Terraform on Azure is a plus.

• Experience integrating with third-party APIs and building or consuming services that support an application tier.

• Healthcare data experience strongly preferred: HL7 FHIR (including SMART on FHIR and OAuth 2.0 authorization patterns), HL7 v2, NCPDP, claims data, EHR integration, and handling PHI under HIPAA.

• Prior experience in a startup or small-team environment where you were accountable for outcomes without a large supporting organization.

Skills & Competencies

• Practical judgment on build versus buy, and on when “good enough for now” is the right call.

• Security and compliance mindset — treats PHI protection and auditability as design inputs, not afterthoughts.

• Clear written communication; documents decisions so they survive the person who made them.

• Comfortable with light direction and ambiguous requirements.

• Fluent and enthusiastic user of AI tooling, with judgment about where it helps and where it does not.

• Collaborative and low-ego; builds trust across clinical, operational, and vendor boundaries.

• Bias toward finishing: takes work through production, monitoring, and handoff rather than to the demo.

Work Environment

• Remote-first, distributed team; core collaboration hours with occasional travel to Mt. Laurel, NJ.

• High-ownership engineering team supporting live pharmacy operations.

• Frequent use of cloud consoles, Databricks, Git, and AI development tooling.
